Do I need fire extinguishers for my business?

Do I need my fire extinguishers serviced annually?
Yes – The Fire safety order states all extinguishers should be serviced at least once a year on business premises. They should be serviced by a “Competent Person” and to the British Standards BS5306-3.
Will any fire extinguisher comply?
No – Different extinguishers are needed for different types of fires. Although some extinguishers have multiple uses on multiple fire types, you should always have the most practical and effective extinguisher to accommodate the risks in situ.
Do I need a certain number of extinguishers?
Yes – The number of extinguishers is calculated through the British Standards BS5306 – 8.
Can my extinguisher be on the floor?
No – All extinguishers must be wall mounted on brackets or on fire extinguisher stands with clear identification signs present indicating what type of extinguisher it is and what fires it can be used on. This prevents the extinguisher being a trip hazard as well as having a known location ready for use if ever needed.
